The X-Men film series has been one of the most popular trilogies in recent years. Many fans and movie goers felt a connection with the outcast superheroes and that led to much of the success. The most popular character was Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman. Wolverine’s enigmatic past in the films left it open for the character to get his own film. When it was announced that a film based on the exploits of the character would be made, many fans were happy. The film was directed by Gavin Hood, an academy award winner. The film is titled X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It starts Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, Danny Huston and several others.
The film is the origin of how the mutant known as Logan received his metal claws and became known as Wolverine. In this movie he seeks revenge against his half brother Victor, also known as Sabretooth, who murdered the woman he loves.
The first and foremost thing to be said about this movie is that Hugh Jackman does great in the role that made him famous. He gives just as good of a performance as he did in the first film. Liev Schreiber also does great in one of his few villainous roles. However, the film, while definitely having its high moments, just feels mediocre. At no point to you feel like the characters are in any real danger. Another drawback is that the story just is not very inspired. The concept of a man getting revenge for the death of a loved one has been done so many times it is amazing they have not written a text book on how to tell such a story.
The other characters, in comparison to Wolverine, just seem flat. And the movie goes out of its way to deliver fan favorite characters, but the on screen versions of those characters bare little to no resemblance to the source material, so the point is almost entirely lost. The writers seemed to have focused so much on packing cameos into it that the central story seems lost. The primary problem with the film is that at the end of the day it just is not as memorable as the X-Men trilogy. The film, however, was successful enough to greenlight a sequel that will most likely take place in Japan. There is also a spinoff in the works for the Ryan Reynolds character Deadpool.
